An unexpected turn of events at the Ahmedabad Rath Yatra has sparked a wider conversation around animal rights and safety. A video of elephants running in distress during the procession has gone viral on social media, prompting questions about their use in crowded, high-stress public events.
In the immediate aftermath, Vantara, a Jamnagar-based wildlife rescue and rehabilitation initiative founded by Anant Ambani, swiftly deployed a specialist team. The team, comprising wildlife veterinarians, mahouts, trained caregivers, and elephant ambulances, worked with local authorities to assess the affected elephants, administer emergency medical support, and assist in their safe relocation.
Dr. K Ramesh (IFS), Chief Conservator of Forest, Gujarat stated that “Following the recent incident involving elephant unrest during the Rath Yatra, we reached out to Vantara for immediate support. Their team responded swiftly from Jamnagar and coordinated with local authorities and animal handlers to arrange for their relocation for better care”
The Jagannath Temple Management also acknowledged the effort ”Vantara displayed a great commitment to ensuring these elephants receive the medical attention and rehabilitation they urgently need” said Mahendra Jha, Trustee, Shree Jagannath Mandir Trust Committee
In the footage, the elephants can be seen reacting anxiously to the loud noises, dense crowd, and general commotion. Several people were reportedly injured during the brief stampede, but the larger concern expressed online has been the visible mental stress on the animals.
Several voices online have suggested it’s time to re-evaluate the inclusion of animals in such celebrations. One user wrote, “These animals don’t belong in chaos. They deserve peace, not parades.” Another added, “Why does this happen every year? It’s time we protect, not parade them.”
The incident has once again underscored the importance of empathy and responsibility towards voiceless beings.
