Medicover Hospital Pune Doctors Save the Vision of a 6-Year-Old Boy After Firecracker Blast

Pune: A 6-year-old boy in Pune got a new chance at life and vision after a terrifying firecracker accident. The child had placed a firecracker inside a traditional stove (chulha) and bent down to watch. Within seconds, it exploded in his face, leaving him with deep injuries on his cheek, lips, eyelids, and most dangerously—his eye.

His frightened parents rushed him to Medicover Hospital, Pune, where the emergency team acted immediately. First, the plastic surgery doctors worked through the night to repair his face, stitching his cheek, lips, and eyelids back together. But the bigger challenge still lay ahead—saving his eye.

Dr. Kirti Mane, Consultant Ophthalmologist at Medicover Pune, recalls, “The child’s eye was badly damaged, with tears in the cornea and iris. It was a very delicate situation, and we knew that even a delay of a few hours could mean permanent loss of vision.”

The boy was taken for an emergency eye surgery where the ruptured globe was carefully repaired and a special lens was placed to protect healing. What happened next surprised even the doctors. Within 24 hours, the child could open his eye without pain and was already seeing clearly up to 80%. Just two weeks later, his vision was back to normal.

“This was a case where every minute mattered,” said Dr. Mane. “Thanks to timely surgery and teamwork, we could not only save the boy’s eye but also restore his full vision. It reminds us how dangerous firecracker accidents can be, especially for children.”
